In India, the burden of liver disease has spiked, with one in every five adults affected by liver diseases such as hepatitis (A, B, and C), cirrhosis, liver cancer, fatty liver, alcoholic liver disease, autoimmune hepatitis, liver abscess, etc. Congenital abnormalities such as biliary atresia affect one in every 10,000 to 15,000 infants annually.
In India, more than 2.5 lakh people and globally, 20 lakhs die of liver disease due to viral hepatitis (chronic), liver cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma annually. Liver cancer is currently the 16th most prevalent cause of death worldwide, and cirrhosis is the 11th. Treatment for these life-threatening diseases mainly involves surgical interventions such as hepatectomy, liver transplant, and medical management.
In India, the prevalence rate of pancreas disease or pancreatitis is 7.9 cases per one lakh, which includes acute pancreatitis, alcohol-related pancreatitis, diabetes, gallstone pancreatitis, etc. Congenital anomalies include pancreas divisum, contributing 4 to 14% of the incidence rate. Pancreatic cancer occurs in 0.5-2.4 per one lakh men and 0.2–1.8 per one lakh women.
According to a recent study, more than 4.5 lakh deaths globally and more than 12 thousand deaths in India were reported due to pancreatic cancer in 2020. More than 64,000 new pancreatic cancer diagnoses are anticipated worldwide in 2023, along with more than 50,000 fatalities. The treatment for such fatal ailments includes continuous medical management with surgical treatment.
